In Champagne, the two main categories of producers are the big houses, making classic Champagne from grapes they mostly buy, and small independent domains making what we call “Grower’s Champagne”, using only grapes from their own vineyards. We tend to focus on the second category for many reasons, one being that they make more “authentic” Champagne, true reflection of their terroir and know-how. We also like to think that this is where we can find real value in the bottle, without paying for marketing and label. Champagne Francis Orban is our latest discovery and we are quite proud of being the first to offer them in the UK!
Francis Orban is the 4th generation of the family to manage this small domain in the heart of the Marne Valley. After taking it over in 1999, he decided to stop making Champagne for others and launch his own brand - this wasn’t such a bad move: his different Cuvées are just brilliant!
The Marne Valley is the home of Pinot Meunier and Francis is trying to promote this less-known grape in his Champagnes - he does it quite well in our opinion. Pinot Meunier usually makes complex Champagne with a lot of personality and from his Brut Réserve to the highly-complex "L’Orbane", they will show you how a real wine can hide behind each Champagne.
