South West France Wine

South West France Wine

South West wines are for most people a mystery so we’ve tried this week to gather a few examples of red and whites from this beautiful region. The four domains we have selected have in common to be independent family estates, making wine with their own vines and all in sustainable or organic agriculture. Four domains in four appellations: Château Ponzac in Cahors, producing full-bodied reds exclusively from Malbec; Domaine Mouréou in Madiran making medium-bodied and fruity reds with the local Tannat grape. Moving south, the Domaine Rotier in Gaillac makes medium-bodied reds, close to Bordeaux in style though not in price; and finally Château de Jurque in Jurançon, where we have found the most stunning dry and sweet whites from the local Petit and Gros Manseng grapes.

Make you own selection or discover the range with our Mystery Box, in any case you will love this tour of the warm and sunny South West!

Madiran are medium to full-bodied red wines mostly made of Tannat, a local grape providing structure and tannins. This bottle boasts nice fruity flavours (black cherry, fresh strawberry and cassis) and a solid structure. Sweet spices and mint add some complexity on the long, tannic finish. Classic Madiran.

We instantly fell in love with this dry white wine from Jurançon. It exhibits a profound and complex nose (yellow fruit, grapefruit, apricot, papaya), reminiscent of upmarket whites from Pessac-Léognan. Palate is perfectly balanced with an unexpected - and superb - acidity enhanced by citrus flavours. As a result, this is a highly vibrant and fresh wine -...

Domaine Rotier produces beautiful wines in Gaillac, starting with this easy-drinking red. Superb aromas of fresh black cherry, blackcurrant, sweet spices and cinnamon. Nice long finish with a hint of liquorice: this wine shows a great personality while remaining fresh and balanced. Much less tannic than Madiran, Gaillac offers a great alternative to...

A South-West selection would not be complete with the emblematic Cahors appellation, where the Malbec grape is at its best. Château Ponzac is a typical Cahors with a powerful structure and generous flavours of black fruit and cedar wood. Notes of mint and liquorice on the finish refresh this yummy, full-bodied red.

If we had to pick a favourite for this week, "Renaissance" could well be the one. It exhibits superb and complex flavours of cherry, strawberry, grilled nuts and mint. This South-West offer is of course the opportunity to suggest a sweet Jurançon - the most iconic appellation for sweet wines in the region. Boasting a beautiful nose of passion fruit, grapefruit and lime, it is surprisingly fresh for a sweet wine. If you like Sauternes flavours but tend to find these wines too sweet, give a try to this superb Jurançon.

This dry white Gaillac is less fresh than the dry Jurançon but offering more fruit and flowers on the palate. Multiple flavours of peach, pear and pineapple with a touch of vanilla on the finish. 10% of the wine is aged in oak barrel to develop its structure and add complexity. A nice opportunity to discover what a solid white Gaillac can show.

Domaine Mouréou is owned by Patrick Ducournau, one of the most influential winemaker in the South-West, and managed by the Laplace familly from Château d'Aydie.
