Clos des Quarterons - Biodynamic Loire Wines

Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil is a small appellation of Touraine, on the right bank of the Loire River, producing red wines from the Cabernet Franc grape. They are known to be light-bodied and fruity wines with a nice freshness and acidity, making them lighter than their neighbour from Bourgueil and Chinon. Upmarket cuvées can however be much more complex and medium to full-bodied.

In our search for the perfect producer in this area, we have tasted many wines and Le Clos des Quarterons was our top discovery. Owned by the Amirault family for over 180 years, it is today managed by Xavier and his wife Agnes. The 32-hectare estate has been certified in Organic and Biodynamic farming, in light of their strong conviction that winemaking should protect the environment before anything else.

Among all the wines produced by Le Clos des Quarterons, we have selected a few Saint-Nicolas de Bourgueil reds, as well as a lovely Crémant de Loire – a sparkling wine made of Chenin Blanc – and a unique oaked-aged Anjou Blanc, described as “the estate's most personal wine” by the winemaker. Every wine has its own character, showing the various terroirs and parcels of the estate - vineyard is spread across 33 different plots, and soils vary considerably.

Authenticity and quality: those are the two words that would best describe the wines of this beautiful estate. A true representation of what a small and well-managed family vineyard can produce, definitely worth discovering!
