Maison Trénel - Bourgogne & Beaujolais wines

Maison Trénel is the latest addition to our Bourgogne range. Founded in 1928 by Claude Trénel, it is famous for its range of Beaujolais and South Burgundy wines but also the production of fruit liqueurs like Crème de Cassis. The estate was managed by the Trénel until 2015 when it was bought by Michel Chapoutier, who is considered by many as one of the most successful winemakers of the last decade. "Beaujolais is a region in renaissance, with a new generation of dynamic winemakers, and we are very confident we'll be able to further develop this high quality négociant company". Trénel’s renown is due both to its high standards in selecting wines, choosing only those which reflect the region’s finest terroirs, and to its artisan production of Bourgogne fruit liqueurs.

When we tasted them, we thought that all the wines from Maison Trénel were extremely well-crafted. Their whites are just excellent and their Beaujolais made us realise that the region was not getting the recognition it deserves. We've heard - and said - a lot about Beaujolais wines and now is the time to start looking at them more closely: the quality has been improving a lot recently and some Crus like Fleurie or Saint-Amour can produce really amazing wines for a terrific value!

The Beaujolais “Rochebonne” is made of old Gamay grapes grown near the famous Pierres Dorées area. The oldest vines on this vineyard were planted in 1922, which brings a lot of structure and character to the wine. The nose is typical of a Beaujolais with plenty of fruit like cherry, raspberry or blueberry. It’s a light to medium-bodied wine, fine and...

Mâcon Villages is the classic South Burgundy Chardonnay from vineyards around Mâcon and 26 villages in the area - hence the name! No oak here, just 8 months ageing in tanks to get this round and supple wine, with aromas of ripe apple, peach and flower. It has a nice minerality and some freshness provided by the clayey soils of the Mâconnais. The finish is...

Viré-Clessé is located in the North of the Mâconnais area, around the villages of Viré and Clessé. Its soils of limestone and clay are perfect for the production of elegant and aromatic Chardonnay. Trénel’s Viré-Clessé is a dry wine displaying a complex nose of grapefruit, passion fruit, lime, peach and white pepper - a complex nose for this kind of...

Link between South Burgundy and North of Beaujolais, the Saint-Véran appellation only produces white wines. It is for us an area where value for money is absolutely brillant. Trénel’s Saint-Véran is a blend of grapes planted on South and West-oriented parcels, carefully selected for their quality clay-limestone soils. Pale gold in color, it offers an...

The Fleurie appellation is located in the middle of the Beaujolais region and wines are often described as feminine and floral. Though its name literally means "flowery", it has nothing to do with the local flora but with a Roman legionnaire named Fleurus who settled in the area. As for this wine, it has a powerful nose of flower (violet, peony), cherry,...

Saint-Amour is the most northerly appellation and one of the most famous thanks to its romantic name! Wines are usually among the lightest of the Beaujolais crus, offering notes of spiced berry and stone fruit, together with a nice minerality. This one opens up nicely in the glass to reveal intense notes of ripe red fruit - raspberry, cherry, redcurrant -...
