Pinot Blanc Vieilles Vignes 2015 Alsace - Domaine Meyer-Fonné

This Pinot Blanc is the first wine we tasted from Meyer-Fonné and it instantly caught our interest: just too good for the price... This "old vine" offers yummy flavours of yellow peach, white flowers and apple, with a beautiful freshness on the finish. Much more pleasant and complex than its price suggests.

Did you know?
A "Pinot Blanc" from Alsace does not need to be 100% made of Pinot Blanc. In fact, there can be only a small proportion of this grape - just like in this bottle (20%) - and blended with other types of Pinot grapes.

What experts say

87/100 "Meyer's 2014 Pinot Blanc Vieilles Vignes is a cuvée of 50% Auxerrois, 25% Pinot Blanc, 15% Pinot Gris and 10% Chardonnay with "just a kiss of Pinot Noir." Félix Meyer says, "I like to blend the Pinot family because Auxerrois can be quite fat and broad, whereas Pinot Blanc lacks power but brings freshness. Pinot Gris gives complexity, structure and power. Chardonnay is not allowed for table wines, but I think in this assemblage it is very interesting since it gives a crisp acidity. The assemblage brings more reliable wines every year." Meyer composes the assemblage of three or four different parcels in April, but "some grape varieties are picked and fermented together when they are ripe at the same time." The 2014 was bottled in May and opens deep, well concentrated and lemon-fresh on the aromatic nose. Quite smooth, full, juicy and intense on the first palate, but the finish reveals a nice purity, structure and aromatic intensity. Very fine tannins, which give a stimulating grip.” (2014 vintage)

85/100 "A creamy Pinot Blanc, with flavors of kiwi, Red Delicious apple and blanched almond framed by lively acidity and a stony underpinning. Drink now." (2014 vintage)

If you've never tried a Gewurtztraminer, maybe this is time... because this is a great example, showing how special this grape is. It offers a sweet nose with explosive aromas of mango, passion fruit, rose and honey. Palate is heavy and complex but not too sweet. The ideal wine to drink with mild Asian food or blue cheese.å

Coming from different parcels and 40 years old vines, this fruity Pinot Noir is charming and elegant. It also reminds us that when in the right hands, this grape has also a lot to offer in Alsace - and can often show better value than pricey, average bottles from Burgundy. A simple and direct Pinot Noir with plenty of fruits and very little oak....
