In a context of misery and famine, Nicolas Rolin, the Chancellor of the Duke of Burgundy Philippe Le Bon, founded the Hôtel-Dieu in Beaune to come to the aid of the “sick and needy”. Since its creation, this hospital has been financed by donations in cash, lands, real estate and, quite naturally in Burgundy, in vines. The wines of the Hospices were sold at auction for the first time in 1859 and since 2005, it has been organised by Christies. The auction is open not only to professionals but also to private buyers; it always occurs on the 3rd Sunday of November.
